Water
is the most important item in a disaster supply kit

should not be stored in milk containers
(use 2 liter soft drink bottles)

takes 16 drops of bleach to purify 1 gallon

1 gallon is needed each day per person

You can live without food longer then you can live without water.

Tornados
are considered the most violent natural disaster

can occur at any time of the year

can leave a path 150 feet - 1 mile wide

usually come with thunderstorms, but not always

A tornado WATCH mean conditions are good for one to form, a WARNING means one has actually been sighted or shows on radar.

Earthquakes
are called the most destructive force on earth

are the only natural disaster that cannot be predicted

occur somewhere about every 30 seconds

are only felt by humans about 1 every 10 minutes

Strapping your hot water heater to the wall will keep it from falling over or starting a fire during an earthquake and it will provide 30-50 gallons of water to drink.

Floods
are the most common natural disaster in the US

have killed more than 10,000 people in the US since 1900

80% of deaths are from cars and trucks driving through high water

6" of fast moving water can knock a person down

24" of water can float a large vehicle - even a bus

Keeping an eye on the weather and an ear to the radio or TV are good ways to stay aware of possible floods.
